TOPIC 5: HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO LEARN TO PLAY PIANO?
We've all heard that it takes YEARS to be able to play the piano. And honestly, if you're talking Bach and Beethoven, that's true. But if your goal is to play popular music, it doesn't take nearly that long to learn how to play.
My answer to that question is usually two questions of my own, "How much time do you have to practice?" and "What do you know already?". If
you're starting from scratch and have at least 15 minutes to devote to practicing every day, my goal for my private students is to have them playing along with their favorite song in 6 months. Some have beat that goal, but 6 months is a realistic timeframe.
Once you learn the basics, you can continue on learning more advanced techniques for the rest of your life. I've been playing for more than 30 years and I still learn things. But in order to answer that question on a more universal level, think of what the date is 6 months from now, and that's when you should be able to play along with any popular song.
